Hi Benjamin,
What James is referring to as the "original" version of Way of the Puck was a work-in-progress edit of the movie screened in Houston many years ago. Back then, the film was far more meandering and philosophical, for better or worse!
This was one of a dozen versions of the film as it was being made over the years. Unfortunately, the version that James refers to is not available, although some screener DVDs from that time may be floating around in the world.
At least no illegal copies are available online of this one...
Any info you may need about the current version is at wayofthepuck.com
Thanks for inquiring, and I hope you have fun at the tournament in Houston. It sounds like it's going to be one for the ages! (A phrase that proves I'm older than you).

| What is really cool is that there is even another version from before these two and I have a copy. I wonder if Eric would mind me pirating it and posting it online :)

say what ? i love the original version of course due to the element of comparing music and air hockey ... not to mention that seeing my cats when they were still babies at the time just melts my heart. :) and i thought it was an interesting twist (even had it not been me). but for me ... it was real. my techniques of puck control and enhanced relaxation of mallet grip are derived straight from my studies with members of the atlanta symphony orchestra (mallets in this case being timpani, marimba, xylophone and drumsticks too to some extent) ... one of my favorite scenes in the first one was me doing the diamond drift and talking about it while one of my young cats sat on the table watching the puck go through the drift without even flinching. mr. voo the cat was as focused as i was and didn't even move. my puck contol was flawless in that moment. had it not been, i would have hurt his feet. i cut his cord at birth ... much love to eric for including those shots and clips... that melted my heart. lol ...
the second version made more sense from a marketing perspective and had a lot of footage of mike rosen (in the business mindset), instead of myself and family from an artistic and philoshophic perspective.
now i am very curious about what tim is talking about.
a bit too much of andy though in all the versions.

Maybe 25 years from now Warner Bros. (or whoever) will offer a director's cut special set with ALL the various versions, for devotees of the great director Eric Anderson and devotees of AH.

The DVD copy I have of it has James's scene as a bonus feature.....but I think it's probably my favorite of the bonus features.
I related to that scene quite a bit because - before I had ever seen the movie - I had wondered if being a drummer and a musician myself - if the inherent rhythm of the game is one of the things (of many) that attract me to it.

| So what's the next step for Mr. Anderson. We'd love to stay in the loop! Especially if there's any new air hockey happenings.

Hi Justin,
Currently I'm in Budapest working on the next installment of the Die Hard franchise (not as director, unfortunately... :).
Very very few people can make a living by creating documentaries. Even the most highly visible documentary filmmakers (like Errol Morris) have to survive by teaching at a university or by directing commercials. The docs they do as labors of love.
Thanks very much for your interest...
